Compared to a regular automatic gearbox, a CVT transmission is smoother, lasts longer, and, above all, is more fuel-efficient. However, it does have its fair share of flaws, especially when it comes to the Mitsubishi line. Harsh gear changes, inconsistent acceleration, and the lack of reverse gear are some of the most common Mitsubishi CVT Transmission Problems.

As we just learned, when it comes to CVT transmission problems Mitsubishi is one of the leaders, and not in a good way. I want to mention real quick that back in 2016, the company recalled more than 80K vehicles with a faulty gearbox. However, that didn’t fix the situation completely. According to official statistics, complete loss of drive is still a big issue. Now, the CVT is known as the single-speed, stepless transmission, but it does have paddle shifters or shift levers.
So, it’s not rare for Mitsubishi vehicles equipped with the Continuously Variable Transmission to lose drive and reverse, which makes it pretty much impossible to control the vehicle. The Check Engine warning won’t come up, by the way, but, most likely, the engine will be under a lot of stress. Let it cool down for a while, and start the car again. Hopefully, that will fix the issue.
Chances are, you’ve got a leaking fluid. Or, the transmission pump is acting up. This is especially true if you’re driving a Mitsubishi Outlander Sport with a CVT transmission and the problem doesn’t go away after you’ve inspected the fluid. Luckily, it won’t cost you big bucks to replace the pump.
Again, the CVT doesn’t necessarily switch between gears as a regular transmission does. That doesn’t mean you won’t experience harsh, erratic, or failed gear changes/transitions. That will have an immediate effect on the performance of your car. This is one of the most common Mitsubishi Lancer CVT transmission problems. It was mostly fixed after the 2016 recall but is still present on some older models.
In contrast to the previous issue, harsh/failed “gear” change is usually accompanied by a Check Engine light warning. A quick note: this doesn’t happen the second you start the car, but rather when the engine and transmission reach operating temperatures. So, what causes it? The wiring, connector, and faulty speed sensor are usually to blame here.

Another side effect is vibration and shaking, and it only happens while the car is accelerating. Don’t expect any other signs, symptoms, or warnings on the dashboard.
This problem is more common among smaller vehicles, like a Mitsubishi Mirage with CVT transmission. The first thing to check should be the solenoid regulator valve. It might be cracked, worn-out, or failing. Or, the issue will be with the pulley bearing. In any case, I recommend letting a mechanic figure this out, as it’s a rather complex matter.
